5. Cajun Music and Zydeco
Instructor:Dr. Barry Ancelet (info)

You loved him in September and invited him back. So, returning to SAGE from ULL is Barry Ancelet, host of Saturday night's "Rendez-vous des Cadiens," on KRVS, public radio.

Cajun music and Creole zydeco are Louisiana hybrids. Like the blues and jazz, rock and reggae, they are made up of cultural elements that came together in a typically American experience that blended European (primarily French, but also Spanish, German and English), native American and Afro-Caribbean musical traditions.

The American context was basic to the development of these hybrid music forms. Nothing quite like them developed in Europe or Africa. In America, both European and African cultures were far from home and on new ground where new combinations were possible. This talk will trace the evolution of this blending process from its origins through its most recent contemporary forms.

Location: Hardtner Hall, Room 103
Date:Monday,
April 29
Time:3:30 - 4:30 pm
Cost:$39 for 5 talks in LA series
