Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between a grant and a loan?
Grants are money that does not have to be paid back. Loans have to be paid, but at a much lower interest rate than what might be offered by a bank or other lender.

What's available to students through the McNeese library?
In addition to books, journals, videos, newspapers, and government holdings, the library has much to offer. The library staff consists of full-time professionals who are eager to assist students with their research needs. Other available resources include: computer labs, study spaces, copy machines, information from other University libraries, and information about professional schools (medical, law, graduate, etc.)

Who is covered by the student health insurance?
Students who are enrolled in at least seven semester hours. These students are covered anywhere, anytime, 24 hours a day.

Can I pay tuition/fees in installments?
Yes. This is called "fee deferral." This allows a student to a pay portion at first (1/3), and pay the remaining balance later in the semester. The finance charge is $30.00.

What is a PTA account?
A Personal Touch Account allows students to purchase items at the University bookstore and pay for them at a later time.

What if my student is uncomfortable walking to his or her car or dorm after dark?
An Escort Service is provided for students. They can call 475-5711 or stop by University Police, and an officer will meet them and escort them to their destination.

Are students who stay the residence hall required to purchase meal plan?
Yes. A 14 or 19 meal plan may be purchased. Complete information about these meal plans may be located on the Student Services link.

Is tutoring available for students?
Yes. A free tutoring service is available for all students in the following subjects: Math, English, Chemistry, and Biology.

What if my student needs assistance with a personal problem?
The Counseling Center is a free service offered to McNeese students. Counselors are available to assist students through any problem he or she may be having such as, homesickness, test anxiety, or any stress related issues.

Are there services for students with disabilities?
Yes. The Services for Students with Disabilities Office is available to assist students dealing with a learning or physical disability.
